In a bid to find the species of the slaughtered tree, below are some piccies which may help some lovely blog-aholic to recognise it :D

They look like Lupins to me. Are you sure that they're trees and not very big bushes?

I was informed a few days ago by a good friend and colleague (who chose not to reveal themselves on the blog!) that it was quite probably a Sumac Tree (female variant) also known as the Staghorn Sumac :)
